I write about country music. Mostly.

This weekend it was a little bit country and a little bit rock and roll

My pal Tina and I braved the cold, rainy weather Saturday night to catch two live music shows downtown Davenport. First, we saw sixteen year old country singer Lane Miller of Muscatine, Iowa, breeze through an acoustic set on the Community Stage at River Music Experience. Then we drove over to the Triple Crown Whiskey Bar & Raccoon Motel, catching a stripped down version of “hard soft-rock” band Michigander. Read more about that excellent show here.

Back to Lane Miller who has sights set on making a living as a country musician. He’s got a good country sound (reminded me a tad of Dustin Lynch) and he’s a good guitar player.  Normally he has a band but last night it was just him with his acoustic guitar and his dad Matt on backup acoustic.

His mom Amanda (she’s his manager) told me Lane started playing electric in 6th grade after falling in love with Green Day and other grunge rock acts. A few years later he taught himself to play acoustic guitar and learned several country songs his dad liked from the 1990s and 2000s. He knows a slew of them that were on display last night at the RME, including hits from Brad Paisley, Garth Brooks, George Strait, Craig Morgan plus several currents hits from the likes of Jason Aldean and Jon Pardi. He also did a nice job with a countrified version of his fav Green Day’s Good Riddance, and shared two of his originals, a heart breaker Have Again and the faster One Hell of A Country Time.

Lane’s definitely got talent and confidence as a performer, especially considering he’s played only a handful of shows, starting this past New Year’s Eve. “It is hard to find places for him to play because of his young age,” Amanda said.

Did I mention he is just 16? This summer Amanda and Matt hope to take their son to test the water in Nashville.  And for the second year in a row, he will enter the Bill Riley Talent Search at the Iowa State Fair.  Last year he made the semi finals.
