Saturday night sing-along at The Raccoon with Michigander

Jason Singer of Michigander wasted no time commanding his audience April 29 at Davenport, Iowa’s cool new music venue Triple Crown Whiskey Bar & Raccoon Motel. The 24-year-old who lives in Kalamazoo, MI, has a great voice that’s both powerful and sweet. He doesn’t hold back with his self-described, driving “hard soft-rock.” Singer, who was backed by guitarist Kyle Quisenberry, writes all the music and the parcel is rich with anthems that, given the chance, might play well in much bigger venues. Almost as affecting, Jason, who resembles a younger version of the more famous Michigander Michael Moore, has an incredibly likable, humorous and personable stage presence that totally draws you in, despite his claim his stage banter needs work.
My friend Tina and I really, really enjoyed Michigander’s Davenport show, the final gig of a string of dates through Indianapolis, Chicago, Detroit, Madison and Minneapolis.
From the first song – Falling – which Singer had the SRO crowd – mostly guys – singing along Oh-Oh-Ohs to, to later when he taught us the bridge, “Hold me close, hold me tight,” for another single Nineties, he gripped us very tight. By the end of Michigander’s nine song set, the crowd was screaming for one more. He obliged with two more, one called Magic Eyes he claimed he’d never before played in front of an audience, and a cover of The National’s Bloodbuzz.
My favorite spot in the show was the intro and delivery of Safe, a song Singer wrote to remind us all (and perhaps himself) not to be afraid to pursue what matters most to us. “If there is something in your life you are passionate about, just do it,” he urged.
Really good stuff.

[…] My pal Tina and I braved the cold, rainy weather Saturday night to catch two live music shows downtown Davenport. First, we saw sixteen year old country singer Lane Miller of Muscatine, Iowa, breeze through an acoustic set on the Community Stage at River Music Experience. Then we drove over to the Triple Crown Whiskey Bar & Raccoon Motel, catching a stripped down version of “hard soft-rock” band Michigander. Read more about that excellent show here. […]
