I write about country music. Mostly.

Live country music shows in Quad Cities during October 2018

Time for a review of upcoming live country shows in the Quad Cities and surrounding areas. I was traveling in Montana this week (beyond seeing some fabulous countryside, my concert buddy Cathy and I saw Keith Urban in Missoula). So I missed a few shows at the beginning of October.

Keith Urban at Adams Event Center in Missoula, MT, Sept 29.  He will be at Peoria Civic Center on October 12. If you’ve never seen him live, it is worth a flight or drive.              Tickets available for Peoria here:

Back on earth, here’s what I found for country shows the remainder of the month in and around the Quad Cities.  If you are a venue or country artist please let me know of upcoming dates I may of missed for October and should include for November.  In the meantime, there are some really good ones coming up soon:

October 5

  • Crooked Cactus Band and Frankie Joe & Kinfolk at Mercado on Fifth in Moline. Music from 5 PM at this street festival likely winding down for the season. Guaranteed fun.
  • Greg & Rich Acoustic Duo will entertain at the Rock Island Hy-Vee Market Grille.  for a 6 PM shoe.  These guys promote themselves as entertaining mix of 70s, 80s, 90s pop, rock, country hits.
  • Nashville Music Fest hosted by Brooke Byam is a three-day show beginning at 7 PM at the Timber Lake Playhouse in Mt Carroll, IL.  For some reason Brooke Byam just entered my radar and she’s got a fantastic classic country voice (someone call The Time Jumpers). This fest mixes country, western gypsy folk, country, delta blues, pop, and ragtime. Names include the peOple (Marques Morel, Bo Coleman, Michael Gothard, & Forrest Carter Rische); John Till; Lillie Mae Rische (yowza, I saw her at The Raccoon and she’s awesome and is the daughter of Mr. Rische of the peOple!); JaCi Leigh; Riley Horton; and Andrew Jacob Holm who is a story teller. Looks like anything could happen musically at this event! Friday and Saturday shows start at 7 and Sunday’s show begins at 2 PM. Call 815-244-2035 or visit www.timberlakeplayhouse.org.

October 6

  • Angela Meyer will appear at State Street Market  in Geneseo from 10 AM to Noon. If you like sweet country music, you don’t want to miss Miss Angela.
  • The Mallett Brothers will take the stage at The Triple Whiskey Bar & Raccoon Motel and music usually starts around 7 or 8 there. The band describes its music as a melting pot of alt country, Americana, roots rock, jam, and country.  Sounds perfect.   Sample some here.

October 9

  • Sarah Shook and the Disarmers will play The Raccoon, again around 7 or 8. This looks very worthwhile. In April 2018, PopMatters’ description of Ms. Shook was: “She sings with sincerity and conviction, bringing a pissed-punk attitude to her honky-tonk songs that could evoke comparisons to Chrissy Hynde or Kathleen Hanna.”  Serious.

October 11

October 12

  • Jake McVey (shown in feature photo from his gig at Harley’s last October) will cut loose at Uncle Harley’s Bar & Grill in Blue Grass.  Show begins at 9 PM. This Iowan turned Nashvillian has a GREAT live band that plows a wide swat through pop, classic, and original country stuff, with plenty of crowd-pleasing and handily covered rock-n-roll classics.  They are pros and it shows.
  • Valley Queen at The Raccoon.  More folk than country but front woman Natalie Carol has a commanding, clear voice that country fans would dig.
  • Keith Urban with Kelsea Ballerini at Peoria Civic Center at 7:30.  Too bad he didn’t come to Moline this fall but Peoria is just a hop, skip, and jump and this venue is a great place to see a concert. Tix.
  • Whiskey’s Gone, a Zac Brown tribute band, will play at The Redstone Room in Davenport at 8 PM. Tix

October 13

  • Alabama with Terri Clark at the TaxSlayer Center. Tickets still available. This show of your parents’ favorite country artists will feature a super long list of hits. It would not be the right genre term but there’s no band that’s more Americana than this one.

October 19

  • CW Stoneking This gentleman from Down Under looks like a Ralph Lauren ad and from my limited research sounds like something you’d hear jangling from a joint Katherine Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart floated by in the African Queen. Seems more vintage Delta blues than country but this show looks to be retro, dramatic entertainment. Getting my ticket.

October 26

  • Angela Meyer will bring her stuff to Denny O’s in Fulton, IL  8-11pm

October 27

  • Colter Wall will be in the barn at Codfish Hollow at 8 PM. This Saskatchewan singer songwriter will stop you in your tracks with his low classic country voice and cut-through-the-you-know-what songwriting.  For more info:  www.codfishhollowbarnstormers.com.
