The sweet spot for Rio Star grapefruit

A stop at Granny Clare’s Citrus in the Rio Pride Orchard of Harlingen, TX, yields an opportunity to buy the purported sweetest grapefruit in the country. The succulent red Rio Star variety is so sweet because of the just-right sandy loam soils and sunny days of the South Texas Rio Grande Valley.
These days Texas grapefruit growers concentrate on growing only the red variety, and no pink or white and certainly not purple to be found at Granny Clare’s. But you can buy naval oranges too.
My husband should love the half bushel ($38 including shipping and “fancy” packing) I had shipped to our house. Not only is it delicious, red grapefruit is full of antioxidants and reported to help lower cholesterol, triglycerides, blood pressure and also boost the immune system. Good deal.
