Irish folk band Connla coming to Friday house concert

Music host John Taylor features the hot Irish band Connla at his next house concert Friday, July 28, 2017, in Cambridge, IL.

“If you were planning to go to just one concert at our house this year, this concert would be at the top of my list of recommendations,” noted John in an email sent today to promote the show.

I was unfamiliar with the band Connla and the word Connla so I did a little Wiki digging. I found Connla is a tragic character of Irish mythology.  He was unknowingly killed at the hand of his father who commanded his son to keep moving forward, to never refuse a challenge and to remain anonymous at all costs, even death.

Connla, the band, I learned is a five-piece ensemble that’s has been racking up Irish music awards, including:

  • New Group of the Year, Chicago Irish American News 2016
  • Best New Group, Live Ireland Music Awards 2016
  • Vocal/Instrumental Album of the Year, Live Ireland Music Awards 2017
  • Best New Sound, Best of the Year Awards Chicago Irish American News 2016 – Jack Baker

According to the band’s website, Connla is made up of Ciara McCafferty (vocals), Ciaran Carlin (Flute/Whistles) and Paul Starrett (Guitar) Emer Mallon (Harp) and Conor Mallon (Uilleann Pipes/Whistles). It describes the music of Connla as, “sensitive and innovative arrangements of traditional and modern folk songs and tunes.”
